Preservation

Cooking and baking sure can be a messy activity, but our library is also focused on ensuring the preservation of the collection so that users now and in the future can extract the most out of what we have to offer.

We have been able to create a space that will ensure the lasting legacy of chefs from every era. The collection will be housed in a temperature, humidity, and light controlled room that will help maintain materials in way that promotes their longevity. Food and beverages will not be allowed in the cooking wing unless explicit approval from the library. Special events and cooking demonstrations will be allowed, but under supervision, and with protection of the collection kept in mind.

Items within our historical collection will be monitored closely to ensure there is no unexpected deterioration. These items will be cataloged and preserved using the most up to date industry standards. This includes proper storage, filing, labeling, etc. Items that are part of our hands on use will be monitored to ensure that there aren’t tears, spills, or burns that prevent other patrons from using the materials. Those items that are deemed unsalvageable will be removed from the collection and replaced if funds are available.

Tools will be checked upon return to the library to ensure proper cleaning has been done. Patrons that have not properly cleaned materials checked out of the library face a fine. Fines will be used to purchase additional materials for the collection. Bakeware that is not properly cleaned will be washed in the staff dishwasher to ensure that they are sanitary before being properly stored on shelves or given to the next user. These tools will also be inspected periodically for any ware and tare that they may experience. Items that are seen as unfit for use will be disposed of, and, if finances allow, replaced with a tool equal to, or better than the original. Cooking on the Run kits will also be checked upon return to make sure that all items are returned. Missing or damaged items may come with a penalty to the patron. Items that are in need of replacement will be replaced with an item equal to or better than the original when funds permit.
